Parts of the Whole (Abstract)

This ongoing photo series focuses on abstract patterns, textures, and color in nature at various scales from extreme macro and up. The scale and subject may not be clear at first view or without a description, but the frame represents part of a whole, be it an animal, plant, ecosystem, or greater.

These colorful scales belong to a male eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus). Males of this species show off a brilliant aqua and blue color pattern on their sides and throat during breeding season to impress the ladies.
